In the fall, our First Year Seminar explored the importance of home to all of us. In those discussions, we talked about how although all humans need physical shelter to feel safe, the ache for home moves far beyond the need for shelter. Our discussions brought us to the realization that home, for many of us, comes in the form of acceptance, love, and support from others. Our guest speakers in the fall emphasized the point that for children with housing insecurity, building healthy relationships at school can be an important way to “finding home.” In that spirit, we embarked on a three-tired project. The students partnered with YMCA after-school programs at four local elementary schools; over the course of the semester, they formed pen-pal relationships with students, designed and executed after-school programming, and created care packages. Through these projects, we hope we were able to create a sense of belonging and support that will have an impact far beyond this semester!
