Featured Student: Shontrea Hogans

Shontrea Hogans is a Psychology major with an emphasis in culture and gender diversity and a Democracy and Justice Studies minor.

When do you plan on graduating? I plan on graduating May 2020.

Why did you major in Psychology and minor in DJS? I had originally started out as a human bio, but after taking some courses, I realized it was not what I was passionate about. I have always had tremendous interest in what the mind, personality, and behavior play a role in our lives. When I took my first intro psychology class in college, I realized it was my passion. My minor ties into my love for social justice. Besides psychology, social justice is what ignites my fire.

What are your plans for after graduation? After graduation, I plan to go to graduate school to obtain a master of education in student affairs. I have seven schools that I am applying to, all out of state. My top as of now is University of West Georgia.

What academic experience or accomplishment are you most proud of? I am most proud of the progress I have made during my college career. Both my academics and leadership have grown so much since my freshman year. To go from a quiet, shy, non-invested person, to a graduating senior who is applying to grad school and winning a Wisconsin College Student Leader of the Year Award. Those are big accomplishments.

What single thing do you hope to accomplish at UWGB before graduating? I hope to leave UWGB a better place than when I arrived. Especially for multicultural students, who many times are swept underneath the rug. I want them to have better opportunities, social resources, and a prominent voice at the table. I hope that UWGB is a better place for them to thrive not just survive.

What do you do for fun? I love to read and paint. However, most times my friends and I just watch Grey’s Anatomy together.

What else do you want people to know about you? I recently just won the statewide Wisconsin Leadership Community Choice Award for College Student Leader of the Year.
