Common CAHSS 2021: Better Critical Thinking Won’t Help (Much) with the Misinformation Problem (w/ Dr. Kyle Whitaker)

Common CAHSS 2021: Better Critical Thinking Won’t Help (Much) with the Misinformation Problem with Dr. Kyle Whitaker was recorded live Tuesday, November 30, 2021.

A common response to the misinformation problem infecting American democracy is to decry the inability of most people to think critically. If this is indeed a major reason that so many are susceptible to misinformation, then the solution is to train people better. Unfortunately, that won’t help.

The College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences for the third annual Common CAHSS Conference 2021 event themed “Truth, Information, Misinformation, and Democracy,” sought to explore the role of the modern university in supporting the “continual and fearless sifting and winnowing by which alone the truth can be found,” which has been part of the University of Wisconsin identity for over a century.

This Common CAHSS 2021: Truth talk was recorded in Studio One in the Weidner Center for the Performing Arts.
