Featured Student: Kendra Schmelling

Kendra is a double major in Political Science and Public Administration. Here’s what Kendra had to say:

When do you plan on graduating? I am set to graduate in the Spring of 2019.

Why did you major in Political Science and Public Administration? I majored in Political Science because when I first entered UWGB I had plans to be a political analyst or one day run for elected office. I majored in Public Administration because I saw it as a way of serving the community without the same spotlight and political intensity of elected office. Public Administration is definitely my favorite of the two majors and I enjoy the more “behind the scenes” role that it plays in public life.

What are your plans for after graduation? I plan to attend law school in the fall of 2020.

What academic experience or accomplishment are you most proud of? I am most proud of my internship with the City of Green Bay’s Law Department. In this role I have been able to meet the leaders of Green Bay and get a hands on experience crafting new city ordinances.

What single thing do you hope to accomplish at UWGB before graduating I want to complete a research project that is meaningful to the community. Right now I’m working on an Honors in the Major project with Dr. Helpap that is looking to assess childhood food insecurity in the Brown County area.

What do you do for fun? I work with animals! I have volunteered at or been employed by the Wisconsin Humane Society – Green Bay Campus (formerly the Bay Area Humane Society) for the past three years.

What else do you want people to know about you? I completed a travel course during the 2019 January Interim in Quito, Ecuador and the Galapagos Islands. I would definitely recommend a January Interim study abroad course to anyone who wants the study abroad experience but isn’t sure they want to spend a full semester away!
