Featured Alum: Jena Richter Landers

Jena is a 2013 graduate of the UWGB Communication program with emphases in Public Relations & Electronic Media and a minor in Corporate Communication. She is currently a Social Media Coordinator at UW-Green Bay. She manages flagship accounts for all four campuses, serves as a social media consultant for all University presences, and serves on the Marketing and University team wherever needed.

Why did you decide to major in Communication? I have always been a skilled communicator and the career paths in Communication seemed attractive to me.

What academic experience or accomplishment are you most proud of? It is a tie: When I was a student, I help develop the brand-new class Social Media Strategies with Prof. Phil Clampitt and a few other students and alumni. After graduating, I wrote a chapter for the textbook that is currently used in the course. It is exciting that I influence UW-Green Bay students coming through the program after me in social media, which is now an emphasis within the program! Social media strategy is a world that was really in its infancy when I was a student.

What is an important goal or accomplishment you are currently working on? My goal this year is to be more present, especially in my relationships. Social media/Communication is a very plugged-in, fast paced career field, but I am trying to find balance and live in the moment when I can.

What do you do for fun? My husband and I have two bull terriers. We really enjoy hiking with them. I also enjoy cooking, baking and yoga, and I am one of the founding members of a Super Club Club which was featured in USA Today newspapers across the state last summer.

What else do you want people to know about you? I am really grateful for my experience at UW-Green Bay. Faculty and staff across the University played a role in setting me up for post-graduate success. My advice for current undergrads would be to step out of their comfort zone and try things that scare them—new opportunities, projects, challenges, internships, etc.—these experiences will teach about yourself and help you grow (as well as build your resumes!)
