About the Cover Art

The CAHSS and Effect cover art was created by students enrolled in Advanced Studio Web Design (Design 433) at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay.  The course is taught by Dr. Jeff Benzow, associate professor in the Design Arts program.  In this course, students apply “concepts and skills in advanced communications projects such as web design and epublication, filmmaking, and storytelling.”

Early this semester, I attended the class to talk through the project with Dr. Benzow and his students.  We talked about the goals of the CAHSS and Effect publications, and they asked me tough questions about the intended audience, type of content, desired colors, and more.  A few weeks later, Dean Chuck Rybak, Associate Dean Kate Burns, and I went back to the class to see student presentations of of their projects.  We listened to their descriptions of their processes, asked questions, and gave them feedback on what they showed us.  As someone who has never taken a course like this, I can tell you that I found it to be a really energizing, interesting, and engaging experience.

Later, the three of us reconvened to discuss the submissions and decided that given the quality of the different options, the best way to go was for us to select several and have them rotate through as cover art for the publication. As Dr. Benzow said: “it works for google.”

Special thanks to the students who spent so much time working on this.  I hope they found it as valuable as I did.  You can see a selection of the works here:
