Featured Student: Derek Flannery

Derek Flannery is a major in Communication with an emphasis in Public Relations, Organizational Communication, Sports Communication, and Mass Media.

When do you plan on graduating? I am graduating this December.

Why did you major in Communication? I chose to be a Communication major at UW-Green Bay because I wanted experience in an applied program that taught me a wide range of skills that can be used in a number of different work settings.

What are your plans for after graduation? Following graduation, I will be seeking full-time employment with an organization that allows me to showcase my skills and professionally grow.

What academic experience or accomplishment are you most proud of? I was very honored to be one of the students to receive a University Leadership Award this past May. I was one of 43 students to be awarded for being involved, achieving academic success, and contributing to the campus and greater Green Bay community. It was gratifying to know that my dedication outside of the classroom did not go unnoticed.

What single thing do you hope to accomplish at UWGB before graduating? I want to create a role for myself as a mentor within the Communication department. I would love to be a resource that young students can come to for questions, insight, and advice.

What do you do for fun? I enjoy staying active by going to the Kress Center and walking on the Cofrin Memorial Arboretum trails. My weekends are spent as an armchair expert critiquing films and watching Packer games far too seriously.

What else do you want people to know about you? If I could eat dinner with one famous person, dead or alive, it would be Queen Elizabeth II. We would eat a casual meal at Buckingham Palace. I would prepare Peanut Butter & Jelly sandwiches (my favorite). I imagine she would like them cut diagonally.
