Featured Alum: Cory Linsmeyer

Cory Linsmeyer graduated in 2006 with a major in Art Education and an Individualized Major in Fashion Design. The photo above shows Cory on the runway for the fashion show he produced for UW-Madison during his year in a sabbatical vacancy teaching position following his Master of Fine Arts degree program. Cory now works as a menswear designer for Lands’ End.

Why did you decide to major in Art Education and Fashion Design? I started my career at UWGB as a music major (trumpet) and after deciding that wasn’t quite the right fit for me, I moved on into visual art. (it was in the same building so it was a pretty easy transition) I was well on my way to earning my degree in Art Education when a trip to London and an exhibit at the Victoria & Albert Museum of designer Vivienne Westwood’s work pretty much stopped me in my tracks. It was a real aha moment for me, and upon returning to Green Bay, Prof. Alison Gates really encouraged me to pursue an Individualized Major in fashion design. She had watched my textile and sculpture work evolve to be more wearable, and I guess she just knew I needed a nudge to go after something I was really passionate about. I’m so grateful to her for that! I ended up finishing both my Art Education degree and Fashion Design degree.

What academic experience or accomplishment are you most proud of? At UWGB, it would be earning an Outstanding Senior Exhibition award.

What is an important goal or accomplishment you are currently working on? Right now I have two big goals with Lands’ End. The first is learning 3D design software so we can reduce our carbon footprint by limiting samples, and the second is fostering partnerships between Lands’ End and UW-Madison, leveraging the resources of each to help one another.

What do you do for fun? I love thrifting and interior design. I also spend a lot of time with my dog Winston.

What else do you want people to know about you? I can’t speak highly enough about the art program at UWGB and the amazing faculty there. I really feel that my start at Green Bay set me up for success in life. I am still very close with so many of my fellow students and teachers from my time there.
